CHARLOTTE – For the first time in her career, freshman point guard Theresa Hagans Jr. of the Pitt women's basketball team was named the ACC Rookie of the Week, the conference announced Monday afternoon.
Hagans Jr. is the first Pitt freshman to earn the weekly honor since Dayshanette Harris during the 2019-20 season. The Utica, N.Y. native becomes the fifth Panther in program history to earn the ACC Rookie of the Week recognition, joining Yacine Diop (2014-15), Jasmine Whitney (2016-17), Amber Brown (2x, 2019-20) and Harris.
Last week, Hagans Jr. averaged 23.0 points, 5.5 assists, 3.5 steals and 2.5 rebounds in games against Syracuse and SMU. During the two-game stretch, she shot 50 percent (16-of-32) from the field and went a perfect 13-of-13 from the free throw line. She posted career-highs in points (33) and steals (6) to go along with six assists and three rebounds at SMU. She is one of just 12 players in the NCAA – and the only one in the ACC – to record those numbers in a game since the 2009-10 season.
Through 27 appearances, including 19 starts, Hagans Jr. is averaging 12.0 points, 3.9 assists and 3.6 rebounds per contest. She is just one of nine freshmen nationally to post those numbers and the only freshman from the ACC to do so. The scoring point guard is currently first on the team in assists (105) and steals (49), and second in points (324) and points per game (12.0).
Up next, Pitt returns home to face Georgia Tech on Thursday, Feb. 19 at 6 p.m.
