Panthers Fall to No. 3 Yellow Jackets in Rubber Match

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt Panthers (15-6, 3-3) fell in their rubber match with No. 3 Georgia Tech (19-5, 6-3) on Sunday afternoon, 12-4, in seven innings.
The game entered a weather delay before the top of the eighth inning started and would be called due to a predetermined 5:15 PM drop-dead time on a travel day.
Caden Dulin hit his second home run of the season in the seventh inning on a three-run blast to right. AJ Nessler went 1-4 with an RBI on a single in the seventh. Derrick Tarpley Jr. made his third start of the year in center and recorded a hit for the second-consecutive game on a single to center. Lorenzo Carrier drew two more walks on Sunday which brought his total to six for the weekend. Julian Irizarry came in as a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning and roped a double.
Georgia Tech opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the second inning. They added two more unearned runs in the top of the fourth to take a 4-0 lead in the series finale.
The Yellow Jackets would add six runs in the sixth inning and two runs in the seventh as they took a twelve-run lead in the seventh inning.
Julian Irizarry led off the bottom of the seventh with a pinch-hit double in the right-center gap and moved up to third on a Derrick Tarpley Jr. single to center. AJ Nessler lined a single up the middle to drive in Pitt's first run of the game as Irizarry scored from third. On the very next pitch, Caden Dulin hit an opposite-field three-run home run to right. It was Dulin's second homer of the season and Pitt's ninth of the weekend. Pitt trailed 12-4 in the seventh.
Before the eighth inning started, the game entered a weather delay. Because of travel day restrictions and a predetermined drop-dead time of 5:15 PM, the game ended in the seventh inning.

The Panthers travel to Kent State this Tuesday (3/24 at 3 PM) before hosting Youngstown State (3/25 at 3 PM) at Charles L. Cost Field on Wednesday.
