Panthers Shine at Virginia Challenge

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Panthers completed the Virginia Challenge, winning the women's 5000 meters, taking second in the men's 100 meters, the women's 200 meters invite and the men's 4x100 meters relay in addition to securing numerous personal bests and top-10 program times.
FRIDAY RECAP
- Starting off with the 100 meters prelims, Maliah Edwards on the women's side and Che Nwabuko from the men's team advanced to the finals. Edwards ran a time of 11.72 in the prelims and then 11.88 in the finals to finish seventh. Nwabuko qualified for the finals with his 10.56 preliminary time, which was beaten in the finals with his personal best 10.28 speed to secure second place. Previously in a tie for seventh all-time, Nwabuko is now tied for third in program history.
- In the 3000 meters steeplechase, Pitt had Ava Lane for the women and Ethan Feinstein for the men both take fourth place in the event. Lane posted a personal best 11:17.41 whereas Feinstein crossed the finish line in 9:16.13.
- Camy Kiser competed in the 1500 meters race, finishing in fourth place with her time of 4:27.90.
- Eva Baldursdottir leaped 1.72 meters in the high jump invite to capture another fourth-place finish for the Panthers.
- Josue Richardson completed the 400 meters hurdles in 52.59 to collect eighth place. Corey Greenfield completed the race in 55.28, a personal best.
- School record holder in the 1500 meters was selected to compete in the 1500 meters invite, where he finished 11th in 3:41.94.
- Maddie Lewis and Elena Crespo collected new personal bests in the long jump. Lewis leaped 5.91 meters, the ninth best mark in program history. Crespo recorded a 5.55 meters mark.
- Elena Barrall, Sydney Nowicki and Gianna Cagliola earned a spot in the 3000 meters steeplechase invite. Barrall was the top finisher for Pitt, posting a personal best 10:45.87 for eighth place at the meet. Barrall moved into seventh all-time at Pitt with her performance. Nowicki followed in 10:48.93, tenth at the meet and ninth in the program's record book. Cagliola was 12th in 10:56.32.
- Graham Heinrich, the only freshman competing in the 3000 meters steeplechase invite, finished ninth in 9:03.33.
- The Panthers boasted four in the top 10 of the women's 5000 meters race. Ella Cook won the race with her 16:52.44 performance. Sarah Hurst trailed in second as she stopped the clock in 16:53.42, a personal best. Alex Fleck also recorded a personal best, 16:59.64, to take fourth. Freshman Brielle Whitworth ran at a 17:16.10 pace to take eighth.
- Emeka Ugwu ended the day with a seventh-place performance in the shot put, tossing 18.37 meters on his fourth throw.
SATURDAY RECAP
- Jana Bruses earned seventh in the 100 meters hurdles, crossing the line in 13.96. Bruses also competed in the 200 meters dash, running a personal best 25.27.
- Antwan James produced a season's best in the 110 meters hurdles, 14.36 for 13th place.
- The men's 4x100 relay quartet of Jaden Shelton, Che Nwabuko, Colin Kravitz and Malachi Williams took home second with their 40.31 effort.
- Williams, also competing in the 400 meters race, ran a 47.19 time to earn sixth place.
- Pitt's three athletes in the 200 meters invite ran well. Somiyah Braggs recorded a personal best time of 23.26 to take second at the meet and move into in second all-time in Panther history. Alma Evuna Eki ran a personal best 24.00 while Faith Dennis recorded a season's best 24.13.
- Che Nwabuko continued his successful meet with a fourth-place time of 20.89 in the men's 200 meters invite.
- Emeka Ugwu had a personal best of 49.24 meters in the discus to move into eighth all-time in program history.
- With a season's best mark of 15.71 meters, Uri Arnon finished eighth in the triple jump.
NEXT UP
Pitt will head to Philadelphia to compete in the history Penn Relays at Franklin Field April 23-25.
