PITTSBURGH – Pitt fell to Cal, 11-0, in five innings Saturday afternoon in the second game of the series at Vartabedian Field.
The Panthers were limited to four hits on the day, while the Golden Bears scored 11 runs on 10 hits. KK Esparza paced Pitt offensively, finishing 2-for-2 at the plate.
Both teams were scoreless through the opening inning as Kyra Pittman retired the Cal lineup in order to start the game. Pitt threatened in the bottom of the first after Alena Ball and Esparza delivered back-to-back singles and Tieley Vaughn reached on a hit by pitch to load the bases. Cal worked out of the jam with a pair of pop ups to keep the game scoreless.
The Golden Bears broke through in the third inning, using a three-run frame to take the lead. Cal scored its first run after Shelby Frazier made a catch in foul territory, but a muffed throw to second allowed the runner to score and put the visitors ahead, 1-0.
Cal added to its advantage with three runs in the top of the third and eight runs in the top of the fourth inning to extend the lead to 11-0.
Pitt will close out the regular season Sunday against Cal at 12:30 p.m. at Vartabedian Field.
