PITTSBURGH – The Pitt women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Texas Sunday at home, despite outshooting the Longhorns 21-14. The Longhorns benefited from a VAR review that awarded them a penalty kick in the 74th minute.
The first half was back-and-forth between the teams as Texas recorded multiple early corner kicks, but Pitt controlled possession. The Panthers used possession to build into the Texas defensive third, taking the last six shots of the opening half.
Sage Stelzer had multiple opportunities in the box but couldn't convert. Maci Tew, Celine Ottah, and Katie Ellermeyer also took shots for the Panthers in the first half.
The game remained a scoreless draw after 45 minutes with Pitt leading 10-6 in shots.
Pitt controlled possession to begin the second half as well, earning five corner kicks in the first 15 minutes of action after the break. Sophie Rourke got her head on two of the corner kicks but still couldn't find the back of the net.
In the 74th minute, Texas drew a corner that was sent into the box, creating a scrum at the back post. After a VAR review, a handball was called and Texas was awarded a penalty kick. The Longhorns converted, taking a 1-0 lead.
In the remaining 25 minutes, Pitt pushed to find the equalizer, taking six shots. Adi Bianchin had a dangerous look in front of the Texas net in the 85th minute, sending the ball just wide.
Freshmen Desiree Reed and Talyn Guthrie also had looks at net, but Pitt couldn't find the equalizer, dropping its first match of the year.
