Panthers Score Shutout Victory Over Liberty, 1-0

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt women's soccer team (3-1-1) posted its first shutout win of the season, blanking Liberty 1-0. Sophomore Ellie Rowlands netted a header off a high cross from Talyn Guthrie in the 40th minute. The goal and assist were the first collegiate points for both Rowlands and Guthrie.
The Panthers dominated possession throughout the match, leading in shots, 18-6.
Pitt created early opportunities in the final third, taking four shots in the opening 20 minutes. The Panthers were finally able to break through in the 40th minute as Guthrie centered the ball with a high-flying pass that found the head of Rowlands. Rowlands headed the ball over the outstretched hands of the Liberty (2-2-1) keeper for her first collegiate goal.
Just after play resumed, a weather delay ensued with lightning in the area. After the delay, the teams returned to action to finish the opening half with the Panthers taking a pair of corners before the whistle sounded.
The Flames came out of the shortened halftime break controlling possession and landing a shot on goal in the first two minutes of action.
Pitt countered with three consecutive shots, landing one on target during that span.
Elli Johnson made a pair of late-game saves to protect the Pitt lead. Johnson posted a career-high four saves on the night.
