RALEIGH, N.C. – Pitt used a four-run fifth inning to take control and defeat NC State, 5-1, on Friday night at Dail Softball Stadium.
Pitt and NC State traded scoreless frames early as both pitchers settled in. Kyra Pittman and Rylee Wyman each retired the top of the lineup in order in the first inning to keep the game even. Shelby Frazier recorded the game's first hit with a single to shallow left in the top of the second, but the Panthers were unable to capitalize.
NC State threatened in the bottom half of the inning, putting runners on the corners with one out. Pittman worked out of the jam with a strikeout and a bunt pop up to the catcher to leave two runners stranded and kept the game scoreless through two.
Pitt created another opportunity in the third as Addison Oberbreckling led off with a single and Ahmari Braden drew a walk. A fielder's choice put runners on the corners, and a wild pitch moved both Panthers into scoring position, but a pop up to shallow left ended the inning and kept the game tied.
Pittman produced back-to-back groundouts to open the bottom of the third before Carly Short broke the scoreless tie with a solo home run to give the Wolfpack a 1-0 lead.
The Panthers' right-hander quickly regrouped and was locked in during the fourth, retiring the side on a flyout to center and back-to-back strikeouts looking to keep the deficit at one.
Pitt responded in the top of the fifth, scoring four runs with two outs to take the lead. Camryn Murphy drew a leadoff walk and stole second to put a runner in scoring position. With two outs, Tieley Vaughn delivered an RBI double to even the score at 1-1. Alena Ball followed with a single and stole second, setting up Calle Henne's two-RBI single to left center that gave Pitt a 3-1 advantage. Moments later, Henne added to the rally by stealing home to extend the lead to 4-1.
NC State looked to answer in the sixth as Short reached on a hit-by-pitch to begin the inning, but Pitt's defense turned a 5-4-3 double play after a lineout to end the threat and maintain the three-run lead.
The Panthers added an insurance run in the seventh when Henne drove in her third run of the night with a single back to the pitcher to push the lead to 5-1.
Pittman closed out the game in the circle, tossing a complete game while allowing just one run on three hits with a career-high six strikeouts and only one walk.
Henne led the Panthers offensively, finishing 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Pitt and NC State continue the series Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
